An Amazon community paradise?

Man in this lost corner of the world, was an inferior being; the woman was everything. She was the real house-bond. She owned all the property; her children bore her family name, and she never took a permanent husband....

Looking today, something went wrong for the ladies. What's left from this Amazon paradise? Nothing

I wonder if this kind of community ever existed anywhere else?
